FAREWELL FROM THE 25th MADEIRA INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE OPEN

Here we are yet again saying goodbye after another successful event, the 25th Madeira International Bridge Open.

I hope you all enjoyed the competition. As you can imagine, we are already thinking about next year, we are counting on you and your friends to be here, and we hope you will say good things about this event and this beautiful island.

Remember that the dates for 2023 are November 6th to 12th (side events 2nd – 5th and 13th).

Espero que tenham gostado da competição. Como podem imaginar, já estamos a pensar no próximo ano, contamos consigo e com os seus amigos para estarem aqui, e esperamos que digam coisas boas sobre este evento e esta bela ilha.

Recorde-se que as datas para 2023 são de 6 a 12 de novembro (eventos laterais 2 – 5 e 13).

The 2022 Open Teams drew to an exciting close as Ponks’s slender advantage at the end of the third session was wiped out: not only did their nearest rivals, Stonecutters, overtake them, but to add insult to injury Don Julio scored three victories to edge Ponks out of second place by 2 VPs.

Play on Saturday starts at 11 a.m., with two matches before a break for buffet lunch at 13.15 and restart at 14.30 for a further four matches.

Runners-up were Ralph Retzlaff & Matthias Schueller (Germany) on 60.15%, with Andreas Babsch (Austria) & Michael Gromoeller (Germany) in 3rd on 59.59%.

Top Madeiran pair were João Machado and José Macedo in 105th place.

With the able assistance of our full complement of directors, the event ran smoothly and (almost) without incident.

North-South the transnational pair of Julius Sigurjonsson (Iceland) and Simon Hult (Sweden) triumphed with a score of 65.24%, beating second-placed pair Robert Boeddeker and Flora Zarkesch of Germany by 2.35%. In third place were Lisbeth Smed and Ingrid Ledertoug of Denmark on 60.05%.

East-West winners were Even Morken and Olav Ellestad of Norway on 68.93%, with Mark Kaptein and Mariken Schoenmakers (Netherlands) in 2nd place on 65.88% and Helga Alisch and Karl-Heinz Heine (Germany) in 3rd on 62.26%.
